The Velocipede was the first commercially distributed bicycle and known more generally as the ‘Hobby Horse’ or ‘Dandy Horse’. Dandy’s were young rich frivolous gentlemen who were into all of the latest trends and the only people who would could afford them and were not afraid to look look silly propelling themselves with their legs as there were no mechanical parts. there was also no suspension and they seated themselves on the wooden crossbar so they were very bumpy and uncomfortable…yet still incredibly popular!
